An earthquake struck California's San Diego on Friday and tremors were felt in other cities - Oceanside, Escondido and Vista. USGS reported a magnitude 1.19 earthquake, 18 km near Warner Springs. Light tremors were felt near the epicentre.

The earthquake happened in the morning of Feb 23, 2024 at around 11.38 am local time, or approximately 18:35 GMT.

No injuries or damages to any structures have been reported so far, as it was a minor quake.

People took to social media to confirm whether an earthquake had actually occurred and that it wasn't just them.

"Anybody feel the #earthquake in San Diego, just now?" wrote on user on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Just had a loud earthquake. Felt it in north San Diego. Weird that it didn't shake underground, really rattled the house," wrote another resident of the city who felt the tremors.

Most San Diegans live near an active earthquake fault.

The San Andreas network of the three major faults can cause powerful earthquakes—as big as magnitude 8—that can generate strong shaking levels in San Diego. There is 75% probability of one or more magnitude 7.0 or greater earthquakes striking Southern California, based on a 30-year period, beginning in 2014.

Southern California has frequently experienced earthquakes, reminding residents that there are hundreds of active faults scattered throughout the region, prompting seismic activity.

Just last week, a series of earthquakes were reported near El Centro on Monday, the largest a 4.8 magnitude just after midnight, which did cause some damage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
