Lena Dunham is an American actress, filmmaker and writer. She’s the creator and star of the HBO series, Girls. Dunham was born on May 13, 1986 in New York City. Her mother, Laurie, is a photographer, and her father, Carrol, a painter. She has a younger sister named Grace. Dunham was diagnosed with ocd as a child. She spent her early childhood in Manhattan and later attended Saint Anne’s School in Brooklyn. She continued her education at The New School followed by Oberling College. She graduated in 2008 with an undergraduate degree in creative writing.

CAREER
Dunham originally wanted to become a poet. She switched her focus towards writing short films and plays during college. Her early works include Dealing, Creative Nonfiction, and Family Tree. She also created the 2009 web series, Delusion Downtown Divas. Dunham wrote, directed and starred as “Aura” in the 2010 comedy-drama, Tiny Furniture. She won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay, and the film was featured at multiple film festivals.

Dunham is probably best know for creating the HBO series, Girls. She plays the lead role as “Hannah Horvath”, an aspiring writer facing life’s challenges. The show premiered on April 15, 2012. It was successfully renewed for a sixth and final season which will air in 2017. Dunham has won three Golden Globes and a Directors Guild of America Award for the series. She hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live in 2014. Her recent film credits include This is 40 (2012) with Paul Rudd, Happy Christmas (2014) with Anna Kendrick, and Sky (2015) with Diane Kruger.

In 2012, Dunham signed a publishing deal with Random House valued at $3.5 million. Her book, Not That Kind of Girl, was published two years later. The book peaked at #2 on the The New York Times Best Seller list.
