10 best scenes from the heart-breaking story of love and life, Kal Ho Naa Ho

July 2024 · 4 minute read

It’s been 16 years since the iconic Kal Ho Naa Ho released. The film continues to move us every time we watch it. Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta … the film teamed these fine actors and created a collage of romance, comedy and of course tragedy. It also had a nuanced performance by Jaya Bachchan.  Directed by Nikkhil Advani, produced by Karan Johar, the film is also remembered for its music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and dialogue by Niranjan Iyengar. We look back at the 10 scenes with the dialogue that made us laugh, cry and celebrate life…

The scene when Aman tries to explain the importance of a smile. No, it doesn’t solve any problems magically but it surely changes your vibe.

‘Haso jeeyo muskuraoo kya pata kal ho na ho…” he tells Naina philosophically not knowing his own future.

And the scene when Aman reluctantly confesses about his love for Naina to his mother. Heartbreaking, isn't? We could just feel the emotions, heartbreak, and helplessness...

"Zindagi ne pehli baar iss dil ne kisi ko dil se chaha hai, pehli baar iss dil ne kisi k liye saansein li hai, pehli baar iss ne kisi se mohabbat ki hai, Naina iss dil ki mohabbat mein bhaut taakat hai lekin yeh dil khud bhaut kamzor hai ".

The segment when Aman helps Rohit to get the love of Naina, with his 6 din ladki in formula

“Jitna tum ladki ke peeche bhaagoge utna hi woh tumse door bhaagegi … agar tum ladki ke peeche nahi bhaagoge toh woh confuse ho jayegi aur tumhare peeche bhaagegi “

The scene when Rohit finally expresses his feelings to Naina.

"Pyar ka pehla kadam dosti hai, aur aakhri bhi ... bus beech ke kadam reh gaye hai, Soocho, soocho ... aur soochne ke liye main tumhe apni saari zindagi deta hoon"

When Aman reads out Rohit’s blank diary, while actually confessing his own love for Naina…

"Naina kaash mein tumhe bataa sakta, mein tumhe kitna chahta hoon. I love you, I love you very very much Naina. Main aankhein band karta hoon toh tumhe dekhta hoon, aankhein kholta hoon toh tumhe dekhna chahta hoon. Tum paas nahin hoti toh tumhe charon taraf mehsoos karta hoon. Har pal har ghadi har waqt mere naina mere Naina ko doondhte hain."

Aman’s exuberance hides a deep pain. The pain of his imminent death due to a serious heart disease, the pain of losing his love, the pain of not revealing it all…

“Aaj ... aaj ek hasi aur baant lo ... aaj ek dua aur maang lo ... aaj ek ansoon aur pee lo ... aaj ek Zindagi aur jee lo ... aaj ek sapna aur dekh lo ... aaj ... kya pata, kal ho naa ho.”

We are told about Aman's illness at the interval point. But Naina and Rohit discover this terrible truth right towards the end. Naina and Rohit are shattered just as is Aman when he sees his life dimming.

“Naina, is dil ki mohabbat mein bohot taakat hai, lekin yeh dil bohot kamzor hai”

The toughest lesson that we learned from the film is that it’s hardest to let go of a loved one and traumatic to live with those beautiful memories. This lesson is given by Rohit.

“Sachai ka saamna main kar sakta hun Aman, par yaadon se ladne ki taakat nahi hai mujhme”

The scene when Rohit and Naina get to know the truth about Aman’s fatal state and sacrifice and the intense encounter between Aman and Rohit can still give you goose bumps.

"Kaash main tumhari jagah hota... kaash..."

The final farewell is heart-wrenching when Rohit and Naina, now married, visit Aman in the hospital. No words… but just the emotions and the eloquence in their silent expressions is enough to immortalise the film.
