The fourth born of Jacob's 12 sons, and founder of one of the tribes of Israel. Because his older brothers committed acts that displeased his father, predominance among the 12 brothers was assigned to him.

Leah said, "This time I will praise the Lord." So she named him Judah. He was the ancestor of Jesus. He was Jesus' 50th great grandfather.

Judah was trustworthy, chivalrous, intelligent, silver-tongued and energetic. It was Judah who persuaded his brothers to sell Joseph to the Ishmalelites rather than murder him. It was Judah who was responsible fort the safety of youn Benjamin on the hazardous second trip to Egypt. And it was Judah who delivered that golden oration bfore the govenor of Egypt in the name of the aged father of both pleader and judge. It was Judah who led old Jacob tenderly into the land of Goshen. He had talent and he used it. He and his followers were richly blessed. This tribe was the strongest of them all; they always led the way. On their banners was the inscription, "Rise up, Lord, and Let thine enemies be scattered." That too, was the battle cry of Cromwell's men at Dunbar.
